History of the BGCC (DOC)

The Boone Grove Christian Church was founded in the year 1852 and services at that time were held in the homes of the early settlers to this area. Services then moved to larger barns in the area and then to an erected log school house. The very first church building was erected in 1889. This old church provided many wonderful years of growth until, sadly, it burned down on April 14, 1927.

In June of 1928 the members of the Boone Grove Christian Church celebrated the dedication of its second and current church building. This building underwent a major remodel in 1963 and remains the same to this day.

What Is the DOC

The Disciples of Christ denomination dates back to the Restoration Movement created by Thomas & Alexander Campbell in Pennsylvania and Barton Stone in Kentucky. It has grown into an international denomination with over 1 million members. In just the Indiana region, there are 180 congregations, 450 clergy and over 35,000 members.

What We Believe

We are a distinctive denomination in that the core of our belief is the ministry of all believers. In short, this means that each church is congregationally governed, owns its own property and buildings and calls its own ministers. That said, however, each church is in a cooperative relationship with the regional, national and international Disciples of Christ denomination.

In general, there are 10 overall attributes that the DOC subscribes to:

The weekly observance of the Lord’s Supper

Believer’s baptism by immersion

Open membership

An attitude of tolerance and a rejection of creeds as tests of faith

The importance of scripture

Congregational yet voluntarily connectional

The inclusion of the leadership of women

An emphasis on lay leadership

An educated clergy

A priority on ecumenical life

In the spirit of Jesus’ Great Commission to make disciples of all nations, we do not shelter ourselves from any person of any race, creed or nationally who wants to know about the power of salvation. To this end, we involve ourselves within the community and encourage the community to become involved with us.

In any given year we are likely to be involved in all or most of the following activities:
